Floriography

What does the rosemary remember?

The viola’s sorrow? The Flattery Of fennel? The nettle’s prick?

A broken garland floats on the creek. Crowfoot, daisy, and rampant widow

Torn free now from a noose of willow. The morning’s chill rough in the meadow

Knows the weedy language of flowers: The dead men’s fingers, the thistle's sting.

Unfaithful, the tall columbine Hangs its head above the shaded violets.

Who is left to gather the orchids? The rue that once cleansed the afflicted?

-- Eric Pankey, June 1994
